Wi-care™ installation on chemical plant

A competitor’s wireless vibration system was installed on a fan in a chemical plant in Antwerp. This system, part of a wireless instrumentation network, was only measuring overall values and some narrow bands. The system alerted the customer of an existing issue: values levels were high. Because the only available information was the overall value, the customer had no possibility to know exactly how serious was the problem on his critical machine.

Initial situation

A competitor’s wireless vibration system was installed on a fan in a chemical plant in Antwerp. This system, part of a wireless instrumentation network, was only measuring overall values and some narrow bands. The system alerted the customer of an existing issue: values levels were high. Because the only available information was the overall value, the customer had no possibility to know exactly how serious was the problem on his critical machine.

I-care™ solution

We decided to install our Wi-care™ vibration system on the machine. Installation and commissioning were done in less than 15 minutes and the first measurements results have been received almost instantaneously. Every 15 minutes, a spectrum with an Fmax of 4.000 Hz and 6.400 lines of resolution was measured.

It is obvious that the vibration level is fluctuating a lot. Let’ s try to find out why…

The second spectrum is measured at the moment that the vibration level is around 10 mm/sec.

The last spectrum is measured at the moment that the vibration level is more than 20 mm/sec.

When we compare both spectra, there is one difference: the speed. When the production increases the speed from 1.590 RPM to 1.665 RPM, the vibration levels double.

Conclusion

The imbalance value is high in both cases, so cleaning and field balancing are recommended. But the fact that a small change in speed, has a major influence on the imbalance value, is an indication that the fan is also running close to his resonance frequency (critical speed). Thanks to these results, the customer knows the root cause of the problem and can now solve it.

To get this information, all we needed to do was to install the Wi-care™ sensors on the machine and power a gateway in the neighbourhood. This installation took less than 15 minutes. Half a day later, this conclusion was written. This proves once again Wi-care™ is a real Plug & Play system that provide high resolution data.
